Anyone who might possibly think that a book about the Amish is "fluffy" or just a quick superficial read NEEDS to read this book. While I have always enjoyed Vannetta's books, this book delivered everything! Amish, mystery, a bit of romance, and the complexity of the characters and the plot of the book........seriously, if you've not tried Amish fiction and you like mysteries and a "clean" read, this is the book to start with. And leave your preconceptions of the Amish behind. Every community is different in their strictness. I'd give this book six stars if I could.
This is a great Amish suspense with real, deeply developed characters. I always enjoy reading stories about Amish culture and Vannetta Chapman does a good job keeping the story flowing and suspenseful.
WHAT THE BISHOP SAW takes place in San Luis Valley, Colorado where a group of Amish families moved from Goshen, Indiana thirteen years prior to this story. As a string of fires begins along with one murder, it becomes apparent that someone resents the Amish for coming to the community. Henry Lapp is the bishop of the group and has a special gift that he acquired after a childhood accident. He can draw a scene from his unconscious memory that is almost photographic. This ability helps in the investigation after a couple of events. The community unites with the local sheriff and an arson investigator to try to find the killer/arsonist. There are wonderful characters in the book that make this such a special story as they work together to cope with the tragic events within the constraints of their beliefs. Henry and his best friend's widow, Emma Fisher, have a special friendship and help each other through the events. On the other hand, the person responsible for the fires is someone either Amish or an Englisher the Amish are comfortable around. He blends in and doesn't stand out. The community is on edge for fear of another attack but also afraid that it could be someone in their church.
I recommend this book if you enjoy reading Amish suspense and this looks to be another great series by Vannetta Chapman.
This first book in a new series by Vannetta Chapman grips you from the start. Ms. Chapman has a tremendous talent at writing both Amish and Mystery novels. When she combines the two…..you are in for a very entertaining read!
When fires begin to plague the quiet Amish community, fear soon follows. No one can understand why they are being targeted. With no rhyme or reason to the incidents, everyone begins to fear their homes and loved ones might be next.
Bishop Henry Lapp does his best to spread peace and calm through the community but it isn’t enough. The Bishop’s God-given and very unique talent needs to be used to help catch the arsonist but he is reluctant to brush off this seldom used skill. Will the Bishop be able to help his people before more lives and properties are destroyed? You won’t want to miss the first of The Amish Bishop Mysteries!!
When a much disliked Amish man dies in a fire set by an arsonist, Bishop Henry Lapp must guide his people to safety and the truth. It doesn't help that the Englischer they have to communicate with most is a young, brash,red-haired female investigator. As the arsonist ramps up his attacks, Henry has to watch the People lose life, property, and even desire to remain in this Colorado community. Will he make the ultimate sacrifice that almost cost him dearly years ago in Goshen, In?
I truly love Vanetta Chapman's Amish mysteries, and this is the best one yet. So often the bishop of the People is portrayed as being strict, stiff, and power-hungry. Henry is none of these. He truly seeks God's will in all things, puts others before himself, and sees people with "the Father's Eyes." It would be a blessing to be a friend of Henry's.
We also get to know Emma's family. They are as complex as Henry, and are woven into the story along with others of the church to make a tightly woven,multi-dimensional tale.
One quote true for Amish and Englischers alike
"They would all be remembered by their deeds, their kindnesses to one another, and the roots of love they left behind."
What The Bishop Saw motivates me to ask God for vision to see people as incredibly compassionately as Henry and ultimately God our Father see them.
I gratefully received this book from the publisher and NetGalley. I am freely leaving a review. I am solely responsible for the opinions therein.
