So far, I am enjoying this book. The use of french, especially in the title, and in the early part of the book, is very likely will cause many readers, especially Kindle readers, to pass on this book. I got this book free on Amazon, studied french in college and in Paris a long time ago (83'), so I enjoy the french. Regarding the title, Hugo Duchamp, has no brand value yet. As a marking consultant, I would strongly encourage you to rename the title which invites buyers to take a second look. I always check the Amazon store for more info about the book before purchasing.Tags : Hugo Duchamp Investigates: Un Homme Qui Attend [G N Hetherington] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Hugo Duchamp Investigates Un Homme Qui Attend, crafts a French policeman who has been working abroad in London as an investigator for over a decade. However, when he's called back home to investigate the death of a child, the event proliferates with town politics and special interests.
The result is a compelling story, and this is part of what makes this such an impressive read. As the layers of long-held town secrets begin to get peeled back and the possibility of more children in danger, Hugo edges increasingly closer to a truth that begins to engorge and destroy long-held secrets that flank Hugo's own world. In the end, it all comes down to love and revenge, and the consequences that result.
This energetic detective, his French culture, and his love life promises something enjoyably different in the world of investigative mysteries. The story had every element a good story should have. An exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well illustrated scenes that really make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that's something I really look for in a good book.
It’s one of those stories that come along once in awhile that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I don’t do spoilers so I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader!
This would be a highly recommended read from me to all fans of the Mystery/Thriller genre. This new series of exciting adventures has a very modern and different hero. Without a doubt, I’ll be looking forward to reading more from G N Hetherington in the future! Five stars from me.
I have no problem in recommending this book. It is a murder mystery set in a small village in France and stars dual nationality Hugo Duchamp. He is a French citizen who has trained both in France and England but up until the start of the books lived and worked in London. He is called in to take over when corruption fingers the preceding chief of police. He is given instructions not to investigate the murder of a young girl but this all changes when a second girl is abducted and then murdered.
Hugo is openly gay but is not in your face about it. He is not in a relationship although this does change when he meets Ben. There are no sex scenes but there is the development of a relationship.
The book is well written although I did have a little problem with the author continually using the word that instead of who. There were also a few misplaced or missing apostrophes but this is the responsibility of the editor.
Instead of going out this morning I stayed in just to finish the story because I was enjoying it so much. I'm also very glad that I have book 2 waiting as I needed to start it immediately.
At the end of this book we do know who the killer is but there is a cliff hanger of sorts.
What began as a true detective mystery for the first half of the novel with, perhaps, a 5 star rating turned into a story about homosexuals and a 1 star - very disappointed.
Interesting characters.
I did not finish this book. Unlike one reviewer, I did not find the occasional line of French (in a story that is, after all, set in France) to be off-putting. Although I speak not a word of French, the meaning of these spoken sentences was very easy to understand from context and from words that are very similar in both English and French. But a number of very oddly punctuated and run-on sentences kept giving me pause throughout the first few chapters; the sentences were so confusing that I had to stop and re-read them to be sure I took the meaning. A few minor editing errors confused me, also, such as when one character is described as having taken bribes from himself. The problem was just a mix up in character names, but it made for a bewildering moment's reading. However, when I reached the description of an unbearably horrific death of a 10-year-old girl, I stopped reading. I read for enjoyment and prefer lighter mysteries, and I could see that this story was going to be extremely dark..
I was not expecting such an enthralling tale when I downloaded this novel. I found myself caught up in this story of murder and subterfuge. Quite a read! I hope to read more from this author.
I found this novel to have a nice flow. It took me places geographically I have not been before. The main character is pleasant to know and I enjoyed his exploits. Nice plodding, good techniques in crime solving. Just a really nice read.
