Operation Mom How I Got My Mom a Life and a Man Reenita Malhotra Books
Operation Mom was a great read. The characters came alive in full color. The book is filled with humor for both the YA audience and parents of teens (like myself). The 1980s references were absolutely brilliant. Malhotra is going to have teens everywhere googling Wham! I can't wait to read more from Malhotra.Tags : Amazon.com: Operation Mom: How I Got My Mom a Life... and a Man (9789350297278): Reenita Malhotra: Books,Reenita Malhotra,Operation Mom: How I Got My Mom a Life... and a Man,Harper360,9350297272,Contemporary Women,Family Life,Humorous - General,FICTION Romance General,Fiction,Fiction - Romance,Fiction Contemporary Women,Fiction Family Life,Fiction Humorous General,Indian Novel And Short Story In English,Romance,Romance - General
Operation Mom How I Got My Mom a Life and a Man Reenita Malhotra Books Reviews
When it comes to Indian tradition, usually you'd expect mothers to be setting up their daughters and not the other way around. And you'd never expect a daughter to scour internet dating sites to find a boyfriend for her mom. Hora twists the norms of what you'd expect as her colorful narrative paints the picture of dysfunctional Indian families. And what family isn't dysfunctional? It's so nice to see it in a South Asian context.
This story is as much about mother-daughter relationships as it is about Mumbai in a contemporary setting. Having been there, I can actually recognize some of the places where the characters hang out and it makes me want to go back for more, now that I see it through their eyes.
As for the humor, it's not often that you find South Asian authors with such a fresh and unique, contemporary humorous style. In some ways, it reminds me of an Indian Sarah Silberman or something like Mindy Kaling in Mumbai. For this alone I really loved the book.
Also want to know if there is a sequel. I am wondering how things pan out.
Operation Mom – How I got my mother a life… and a man by Reenita Malhotra Hora – YA – Realistic Fiction/Humor – 11th grade and up – What could go wrong when you try to redirect your overly involved mom’s focus? Did you ever think that you could spice up a parent’s romantic life? Here’s one special humorous fiction young adult book set in India that I really enjoyed. Solid, entertaining story all the way through with a variety of twists and turns that kept me laughing. I also enjoyed the natural integration of technology throughout…
I chatted with another recent reader of Operation Mom, my friend Amy, and we agreed on a few things
1. Reenita is a fantastic, talented dialogue writer. There’s natural flow and maintained throughout Operation Mom (along with wit, sarcasm, and memorable characters!).
2. It was a wonderful challenge as readers to adjust and then feel like we’re actually visiting Mumbai with the word choice that naturally is integrated throughout the text. There were many words we both didn’t know before but could figure out using context to understand what they mean.
3. We loved the ending. Brilliant choices all the way through that led to an ending we both agreed was fantastic.
(If you wonder who this Amy friend is, she’s a lovely illustrator/author working on getting an agent/publisher! [...] Amy is one of the first friends I made here in Hong Kong and always inspires me… We love talking about books together!)
Now back to Operation Mom
Author’s Summary “Published by Harper Collins India, this is the story of a Mumbai teen who embarks on a mission to get her single mother dating again. It is a humorous book that appeals to mothers of daughters, daughters of mothers, anybody who loves humor and all who love Bombay! When you try to set your mom’s life right, be prepared to have your own turned upside down. Seventeen-year-old Ila Isham has serious problems. There’s the angst of being an Ali Zafar groupie, for one. Then there are the extra layers of fat she owes to her Punjabi roots. Add to this, parents who have separated; an enthusiastic best friend, Deepali, whose idea of variety is dating three guys at the same time; and her mom’s best friend, Aunty Maleeka, whose good intentions and savvy ways throw up more problems than solutions — and Ila’s got her hands quite full.
When her mother flips out over her plans to stalk Ali Zafar, Ila decides she has had enough and sets out to create a few distractions to keep her mom busy. Her life takes an exciting turn when she decides to hunt for the perfect partner for her mother. With a little help from BFF Deepali, Aunty Maleeka and Dev of the inviting chocolate-pool eyes, Ila will have to brave everything from Lagan.com and OKCupid profiles to meeting handlebar-moustache colonels and middle-aged psychos, as she tries to set up the perfect parent trap for her unsuspecting mother.”

I was recently in the hospital for a surgery and I really enjoyed reading this book, Operation Mom, during my recovery, laughter IS the best medicine… (I met Reenita recently at a few SCBWI events including my first experience in a writing critique group and was gifted this book soon after.) I took/posted a picture right as I checked out of the hospital (doing ok, recovering carefully)
Then Reenita shared the picture and commented “”Let me clarify one thing…’Operation Mom How I got my mother a life and a man’ is fiction rather than self-help but hey…writing fiction is the only way I can keep myself from living at the shrink’s office. As Deepali, Ila’s best friend puts it I might be “pathologically immature.” So thanks Debbie- teacher librarian (i.e. in the highest echelons of those who reserve the right to be judgmental about books), so glad to be able to provide comic relief as you recover. #Laughteristhebestmedicine #cliche”"
