The Honey Thief Fiction Najaf Mazari Robert Hillman Books

I bought this book for a Lamb Korma recipe which a friend told me was included in the text. I made the Korma, and it is uniquely rich, genuinely prepared, and delicious.

I read the book and fell in love with it. This is a modern-day weaving together of classic Afghan stories along with heartbreakingly sad tales of the state of life in a war ravaged nation. It will make you laugh, cry, get hungry (he talks a LOT about the simple-yet-sumptuous cuisine of his people, and includes recipes for the dishes), and he will make you cheer for the triumph of the human spirit in the face of inhuman adversity.

The Honey Thief Fiction Najaf Mazari Robert Hillman Books Reviews

"The Honey Thief" is a collection of folk lore stories. Some of these short stories are historical tales, others are more moral tales, but all are set in Afghanistan and come from the viewpoint of the Hazara--a minority tribe in Afghanistan. These stories give insight into the mindset and customs of these people along with a history lesson about what they've lived through. May of the stories have a rural setting and give insight into daily rural living throughout their history.

The storyteller, Najaf, understood that Westerners come from a different mindset and explained the differences with gentle humor. I found the tales interesting because they offered a look into a different culture. The recipes at the end are worth reading even if you don't cook. They give insight to the culture and some of the directions were quite funny as you'd never find them in American cookbooks "...leave them alone for maybe half an hour. Read a book, a good one....a peaceful book" (from page 276).

Overall, I'd highly recommend this book to those who like folk lore and are interested in other cultures.

I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.
I would recommend this read. I liked the flow of the stories and that the stories appear to come from a real storyteller.
Amazing stories.
Beautiful collection of stories from Afghanistan. After reading it @ library, I bought a copy for a friend who is a bee keeper and he and his wife are enjoying them too.

The only disappointment - which didn't really spoil the book - was the last chapter, a little boring with the recipe altho sweetly written.
I have enjoyed many of the books of Khaled Hosseini. This was recommended and I thought I would give it a try. I must say that I enjoyed it tremendously. The author is a great narrator and has a easy voice. Many of the stories are the beautiful combination of joyous and heartbreaking I have enjoyed from authors from this part of the world. Moving and brilliant.
This was an interesting book that shed light on the tribal difficulties of this troubled land. The insights of the recent history of this region that will have a lasting impact on our country were fascinating. I thoroughly enjoyed the tone of the book that lent a 'storyteller around the fire' air that made me realize that these difficulties are timeless. I also enjoyed the author's recipes at the end. I might try one or two at some point. So this book provided food for the mind, for the heart, and body.
I read the review for "The Honey Thief" while reading a review for "And the Mountains Echoed" by Khaled Hosseini, and immediately ordered it on .

This was an incredibly moving, inspiring, enjoyable book. I read it from start to finish in one day. The lives of people in Afghanistan, told in tales passed down from generation to generation, some historically true, others merely fables told to children. Rich in characters, every chapter tells a different tale. The history of that country, the goodness of it's people, the importance of family, honor, love of country, and the sad history of other countrys' invasions of Afghanistan--Great Britain, Soviet Union, the U.S.-- all have done damage to it's primitive mountain landscape and its people; however, Afghanistan is a country rich in history, compassionate people, albeit a painful past, but an amazing book of people who are not the violent terrorists who are shown on national news on a daily basis. I was riveted by the stories, and actually imagined one day visiting Afghanistan. Not a book you can put down easily!
